Choosing a piece of art for your home or a loved one is an exercise in joy and is best guided by your personal taste and appreciation. Here are some tips on how to pick a painting, especially if it is your first time.
Ganapati, Mixed media on canvas, 36″ x 36″
How to pick a painting for your home
A work of art may be captivating for various reasons – you may appreciate it for its subject, the details, the colours, textures, the workmanship or simply, the way it makes you feel.
When you are looking for something beautiful to adorn your walls, you may want a piece that sits with beauty and harmony with the rest of your home. Here are some aspects to think about while you go choosing a painting –
- What is the mood you want to elicit? What is the aesthetic of your home? A painting on a wall influences these aspects greatly.
- Think about the placement of your artwork. What size would be ideal? What is the colour scheme of the room? Do you want the painting to stand out prominently, as a statement piece, or one that blends seamlessly with the other elements of your home?
- Would you prefer something abstract, figurative or realistic?
Once you have worked these aspects out, and decide to buy a painting from here, there are three ways you can go about it.
- You can browse the gallery here. The paintings are lovingly hand made and are one of a kind. Choose the one that speaks to you, and brings you joy.

FAQ
Q : How do I care for and maintain my painting ?
You will receive detailed instructions on care and maintenance of the painting depending on the materials used. A well maintained painting lasts beyond a lifetime and can be a heirloom.
Q : I don’t understand abstract art, but want to be able to.
Art interpretation is a subjective experience. It is all about individual connection to the visuals, bound only by imagination. Not all abstract artworks have a “hidden meaning” waiting to be discovered. Sure, the artist may be inspired by a feeling, an idea or an ethos while creating the painting and may want to portray it in a non-literal, non realistic style that they identify with. While you can ask the artist to share their vision, feel free to let your instincts guide you to an interpretation or a feeling, nevertheless you may appreciate it purely for its aesthetics. Abstract art is not necessarily a new age thing. Most cultures have had some form of abstract art through the ages, although abstract expressionism came into prominence in the mid 1900s.
“Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes… Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an exploration into unknown areas.”
– Arshile Gorky
Q : What should I know about the painting I buy?
You may want to know the materials used in the making of the painting, for example, is it an acrylic or an oil painting? When was it made? Feel free to ask any question of the artist, including their inspiration behind the piece. Don’t feel shy! Most artists are happy to discuss their art with you, and happy to hear how you feel about their work.
